Safe Work Tasmania Week 2009 - Employee Safety Rep Conferences (see photos below)
Unions Tasmania in conjunction with Workcover held conferences for Employee Safety Representatives in Launceston on the 26 th October and in Hobart on the 29 th October as major events in Safe Work Tasmania Week 2009.
The conferences are a significant milestone in the history of Safe Work Week with a new focus on ESRs, the vital role they play in the workplace and their training needs.
200 ESRs attended from a diverse range of workplaces across the state.
The objectives of the conferences were:
· To provide professional development for ESRs
· To update ESRs on current OHS issues
· To develop a network of ESRs sharing skills and experience across the state
Topics included in the conference sessions included:
· An ESR Skills Refresher – including risk assessment
· Getting results in OHS - including working with Safety Committees
· Return to Work & Injury Management
· Harmonisation of OHS laws in Australia - what's going on & how will it affect the role of ESR?
As well as specific workshops on:
· Manual handling
· Safe Work Systems and Safety Culture
· Dispute resolution
· Asbestos in the workplace
· Incident Investigation - the role of ESRs
There were some lively discussions and extraordinary stories told.
