Anna Stewart Memorial Project

Over the years some remarkable union and community leaders have some through the Anna Stewart Project. All women in the union movement are welcome to be part of it.

Ask you union about being part of the 2009 program!

Each year the Unions Tasmania Womens' Committee co-ordinates the Anna Stewart Memorial Project. The aim is to increase women's involvement in the union movement through training.

Over 6 or more, busy days the program enables participants to see how their union is organised and its relationship to other unions. It provides the opportunity to become involved in important member; to participate in the union office and in meetings with members, officials, other unions; attend formal union training and learn about tribunals and organisations that impact on the lives of members and workers.

All participants meet during the project to discuss women, work and union issues. They are generally sponsored by unions and there is no charge for attending the course.

In 2008 there were 6 participants in the program from a number of different unions.

2008 Anna Stewart Program participants: Kylee McCausland, Ann Rees, Sarah Miller, Karyne Button and Anne Clark pictured with Senator Catryna Bilyk, Unions Tasmania President Anne Urquhart, Secretary Simon Cocker and Women's Committee Convenor Roz Madsen.

During the program knowledge and skills are gained through presentations, videos, formal training, practical exercises, visits to workplaces and tribunals, attending meetings, observing unions at work, shadowing a union official, visiting key organisations and de-briefs and discussions.

This year the participants took on a research task on the need for a national paid maternity leave scheme. They wrote and designed a Paid Maternity Leave kit for workplaces which is an essential tool for the campaign and has now been distributed throughout the State.

Many thanks for the preparatory work completed by Louise Wright prior to her taking Maternity Leave.

Goals of the Anne Stewart program:

  • to facilitate greater involvement of women in the trade union movement and encourage them to stand for office or seek jobs within trade unions
  • to encourage integration of women into trade union structures by increasing the opportunity for involvement in those structures
promote awareness within unions of the particular needs of female members and the important contribution women can make to the development and growth of unions
  • promote women's understanding of the day to day operations of unions and to further their knowledge of collective activities of groups of unions and peak bodies
